Gariep Dam – A Town on the Northern Bank of the Orange River

We arrived late the evening at our accommodation at Gariep Dam and ordered delicious food which was delivered to our doorstep by the owner of a local restaurant. The next morning we started to explore this beautiful town located on the Northern bank of the Orange river. This town was the original dam-building community who did not want to leave after the dam was completed. So that is how it came to be. The view of the village from the top of the hill was breathtaking, not to mention the size of the dam, which is the largest in South Africa.

Vaal Dam

The Vaal Dam in South Africa was constructed in 1938 and lies 77 km south of OR Tambo International Airport. The lake behind the dam wall has a surface area of about 320 square kilometres (120 sq mi) and is 47 meters deep. The Vaal Dam lies on the Vaal River, which is one of South Africa's strongest-flowing rivers. Other rivers flowing into the dam are the Wilge River, Klip River, Molspruit and Grootspruit. It has over 800 kilometres (500 mi) of shoreline and is South Africa's second biggest dam by area and the fourth largest by volume.

Our Top 5 Vaal River carp fishing spots 

In this video, we pay tribute to our top 5 Vaal River fishing spots. We've visited about a dozen places along the Vaal River to go carp fishing and in our opinion, these were our favourites. We obviously haven't been everywhere, these are just the places we have been to in the Parys \ Potchefstroom area. And we must also just make it clear that we do not camp anymore after a series of bad experiences ranging from theft to storms, so all of these places have either chalets or houses to stay in.

The Department of Water Affairs and Sanitation took the decision to open between 3 and 4 sluice gates at the Vaal Dam after the dam reached 100% capacity. More inflows are expected as a weather system is moving over Mozambique in the north.
