Virginia
Geography and history
Virginia is a town situated in the Lejweleputswa region of the Free State Province in South Africa. It was laid out in 1950 near the farm Merriespruit on the banks of the Sand River during the gold rush. The name was derived from two railway surveyors from Virginia in the USA who etched the name of their birthplace in a boulder. The majority of Virginias residents speak Afrikaans and Sotho. The town has the deepest pipi-mine on the planet and maize is the main source of commercial farming.
